Fithaüs - Specialist Bike Fit

Why Physiohaüs Bike Fit Studio?

Hopefully if you find this page, you have done your research and are interested in bike fit and potentially looking to get a fit on your own bike or buy a new bike, look for comfort, performance and hopefully both!

Historically bike fitting has been based on formulas based on body segment measurements and varied from bikes having to look the same which the body adapted to or what a coach decreed was the best position for that rider. Over the last few years, even since we started fitting there has been an explosion in fit systems, tools, protocols, ideas on what increases power etc etc. A lot of shops and now clinics advertise fit as a service. Tools vary from 3D motion capture, 2D i.e. video, goniometers measuring static joint angles and eyeball fits.

What do you need to know about Physiohaus and our approach?

Firstly fitters John Dennis and Morgan Lloyd are both Chartered Physiotherapists and among the most experienced fitters in Europe and have led teaching bike fit courses for companies like Retul and Trek. If a fitter uses one of these approaches/tools, it is likely they have done a course with us. John has used Retul technology since 2009 and was part of the Retul Team between 2010 and 2015 involved in fitting teams and riders from Team Sky, Orica, MTN Qhubeka, Europcar, Geox, Radioshack as well as multiple pro triathletes from both the ITU circuit and Ironman athletes.

Currently we use a Retul 3D motion capture system to inform us of a riders unique biomechanical profile. Key factors that help separate out Retul from other tools is the ability to stream data in real time while the rider is pedalling under load and quantify a riders technical pluses and obviously minuses!

We also ALWAYS measure bilaterally i.e. both sides of the body. The human body is very rarely symmetrical. This can be for several reasons but previous one sided activities can obviously influence symmetry so if you have played a lot of golf, football or racquet sports the chances are you are not exactly a perfect symmetrical specimen any more! Often when we sit on a symmetrical piece of kit like a bike these asymmetries manifest themselves and a fit should achieve balance left and right. Interpretation of data is what makes the fit individual to you.

As experienced fitters, John and Morgan will establish areas of potential change, explain the reasoning for it, make adjustments and measure the effect. All fitters are going to work through this phase of a fit differently. Certainly we fit slightly differently from a process point of view.

We have also recently added Gebiomized saddle pressure mapping technology so we can accurately assess how and where a rider sits in terms of pressure on a saddle, help with saddle comfort issues and compare different saddle shapes during a fit.

At the end of the fit you will receive a comprehensive report of your position that includes contact point position specific to your bike as well as individual biomechanics in terms of joint movement, follow up in terms of appropriate exercises as necessary.

It is important to realise that bike fits are sometimes not finalised within one session depending on a multitude of factors. This can be due to the experience level of the rider who in time may lose weight or get more flexible that necessitates change, accommodating injuries or simply that a rider may not be able to adapt to the change we are trying to implement straight away. The bike fit services available can be viewed further down this page.
