Cycling Performance Test

A 1.5 hour session to test your current cycling performance using a series of power based tests to build a profile of your current cycling level.  Includes consultation on training and goal setting and help with training programmes and coaching available on request.

You will receive a full report and testing can be repeated to measure progress. No prior experience with power testing required and testing carried out on Wahoo kickr so no need to own a power meter.

The search for an individual’s performance potential begins with an in-depth understanding of the athlete’s current physical condition. What are their strengths and what are their weaknesses.

The Power Profile test is a great way to establish your training zones to then take into your weekly training plan. The test can be done at any time but is best carried out during a rest week to ensure you are fresh and ready to go. It is recommended to repeat the test 3-4 times per year as this will allow you to monitor and assess progress towards better performance.

The testing protocol has been designed by leading sports scientists using peer reviewed research (1) alongside their experience working with world class athletes and World Tour cycling teams.  It is an ecologically valid protocol giving a valid assessment of an athletes power producing capabilities across numerous durations. The good news is it can be applied to all cyclists regardless of your level.

The test itself will..

  • Estimate a riders sustainable power output at any duration (<60min), particularly useful in developing interval training that will be well matched to a riders ability, given a small number of power field tests.
  • Estimate the effect of changes or improvements in one duration specific sustainable power on other durations.
  • Calculate “Functional Threshold Power” (60 minute Mean Maximal Power) from less arduous field tests of shorter durations.
  • Establish training zones from Functional Threshold Power.

An example Power Curve

The Power Profile test takes one hour and 30 minutes and will involve a readiness questionnaire (PAR-Q), followed by some baseline measurements such as height, weight and blood pressure. The test itself takes around one hour and will include a ten minute warm up, the main session which will last 33 minutes and a cool down.

We will then analyse the results, providing you with a detailed report alongside your power curve (OLS regression). The report will include your performance during the test, your training zones and information on where to go next.
